Annie Dillard - How We Spend Our Days

“Because how we spend our days is, of course,
how we spend our lives.”

“If we listened to our intellect, we'd never have a love affair. We'd never have a friendship. We'd never go into business, because we'd be too cynical. Well, that's nonsense. You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.”

"I would like to learn, or remember, how to live. I come to Hollins Pond not so much to learn how to live as, frankly, to forget about it. That is, I don't think I can learn from a wild animal how to live in particular...but I might learn something of mindlessness, something of the purity of living in the physical senses and the dignity of living without bias or motive."

one of my favorite passages ever is from her book, and american childhood. i can't find my copy right now, but it's when she's talking about her mother, and how her mother says things, and how her mother says some words in a funny way. she really painted this woman out to be a quirky quack so beautifully. when i find it, i will post it!

i love all of the ones you posted so much. thanks. going to build some wings.
